Advice for Americans in Chile
The massive 8.8 earthquake that struck central Chile on Saturday has left over 700 people dead and many more homeless. The Department of State has urged Americans traveling in Chile to register with their local embassy or consulate and verify their well being with loved ones back at home.
American citizens in the United States seeking information about U.S citizens traveling in Chile should call the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C. at 1-888-407-4747. American citizens in Chile may call 56-2-330-3476. Those with Internet and cell phone service are being encouraged by the Red Cross to share resources with their neighbors. Power and communication lines are out in many areas.
The State Department has also advised against all but essential travel to the region. Looting has occurred in numerous places in Chile, prompting a curfew and army personnel being placed in large cities effected by the earthquake such as Concepcion city. For up to date security information, travelers are advised to call 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. or on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444 outside the U.S. and Canada.
Supplies and relief aid is being sent to the devastated regions and the government has promised to distribute power to much of the affected area as soon as possible. The water supply has also been disrupted in many areas. Basic supplies will be handed out at distribution centers throughout the hardest hit regions.
Those wishing to contribute to the relief effort can donate to The Red Cross or Doctors Without Borders.
