If you are aiming to travel as lightly as possible, a backpack is the way to go.  Most websites recommend backpacks between 40-80 Liters, but I survived a month in Europe with a 28 Liter (Osprey React) just fine.  I did have to purchase a bag during my trip to carry gifts back home, but the bag became a souvenir to myself after the trip.  I am rather extreme when it comes to traveling light, though, and can manage a weekend trip with nothing but a purse.  If you aren’t an extremely light traveler aim for higher than 28 Liters.  For more details on choosing a backpack, visit Backpack Europe. It is in the title of the website after all.

Traveling with nothing but a backpack is useful for a variety of reasons.  First of all, you have less to worry about as you arrive in a new city so you can actually enjoy what’s going on around you instead of constantly hovering over your luggage.  This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be vigilant and take precautions, but keeping all of your belongings on your back (under lock and key, if you want to be extra cautious) is easier to keep an eye on than a suitcase being dragged behind you.

SUITCASES

They are typically bulkier than a backpack, but they can fit a lot more.  If traveling light isn’t a priority, go with a suitcase.  The typically rectangular shape makes organizing your belongings easier.  If you need to pack clothing that can’t be easily rolled up and tossed in a backpack, suitcases are extremely useful as you can lay your clothing flat and secure it with straps (or bungees, if your suitcase doesn’t have straps).  Keep in mind that a lot of suitcases don’t meet carry-on limits.  Check with your airline to be certain what their specific limit is.  They are typically around 45″ total (length + width + height), but it can vary depending on your airline.

It can be tricky determining if your suitcase is the proper size or not.  For more tips on selecting the properly sized suitcases, visit The Travel Insider.

DAY BAGS

A day bag is a separate bag from your main luggage that you take with you as you explore your destination.  It can be a small purse, a shoulder bag, or a small backpack.  You typically carry things like bottles of water, an umbrella, your camera, and any other little item you may need while you are way from your hotel room.
